For exmaple if you like taking photos, you can remove little campera, wifi module etc to have space for big, better campera!
If you like to chat with friendz everyday, you can add better battery, 2/3/4/5g module (5g lol) and chat whenever you want!
If you just like to talk with your friendz and family you can remove everything, add very big battary, standart settings and better speed of phone.
Just watch the video and you will undersand everything!

I watched it and I liked it. The idea is nice but hard to make come true, in my opinion.

This is what happens if you let people with no engineering background design phones.

This project is technologically impossible to be manufactured. There is no human known way of making this work and every person with basic Physics knowledge can tell that.

@user sixpack: I don´t think they wouldn´t have made a video if they don´t know how to realize it.

I like the idea pretty much although I would keep my Xperia Play anyway

The concept seems to be nice but there are many unsolved problems. Making all the components work together flawlessly is a big deal for example. Also just a few large pins are not enough for most components. There simply wouldn't be enough bandwidth to connect them properly. Also how is the "main board" supposed to know how to connect the different blocks with each other? It probably would work if each component type would have a fixed position but mixing them together in random positions like it's shown in the video would be a big technical problem...
Also using modules makes the smartphone bigger, thicker, heavier, less efficient and pretty blocky/ugly because each component needs its own hull and connection. I wouldn't like to have such a phone in my pocket.

How can you make a CPU work using 4 pins when most processor sockets nowadays use 300+?
Heck, even a single RAM stick has more than 100 pins.

If this was so easy to implement and it'd fit together so nicely, we would have seen PCs working like that at least 30 years ago. I don't think manufacturers are still sticking more than 10 different types of ports and connectors to their motherboards just because making it look cool beats making it cheaper.

What will happen when the components start showing incompatibilities (which is bound to happen)?
Will there be a bulky, inefficient OS that includes all the drivers we need (and those we do not too)?
How will the motherboard dissipate heat if it's tightly packed between the screen and the components and it's conducting electricity through all it's stupidly big holes?
What will happen when the motherboard becomes outdated? Will it be 'needlessly thrown away' along with the old 'bloks' that do not work in the new model?

I think a phone that prints money is a much better idea, but it'd need companies to work together to create the most cost-efficient device in the world. We need to get the right companies and the right people involved (presidents, capitalists, investors, mints). But it'll only get started if there's a lot of interest in a money-printing phone worth keeping.

Just imagine the mess it makes when one of those Lego-phones drops. Having to search 20 components every time is not an ideal, I hope.

I'm getting that this type of concept for phone has the vibes of minecraft and lego combined. It seems sort of sweet due to the pretty extendable and customizable way they show this concept in visuals that is. I wouldn't mind if it's like Lego I'd consider it a blokphone. It does sound a bit humorous at the same time but I'm somewhat for this idea. I do hope that there is somebody out there in the world who is willing to make this happen as it'd be kind of sweet.

If you claim it's possible, try switching CPU and RAM places in your computer..

You could assume that CPU & RAM are in one "block" on the mobile.

Honestly, you'd have better luck switching CPU and RAM slots than connecting both CPU and RAM with the rest of the components with 4 pins.

Honestly, I don't think CPU, nor RAM would work by connecting 4 pins to somewhere on a plat but whatever.

Sorry for bringing up this thread again. I hope it's okay (instead of creating a new one).

When i read about this idea and saw the video some months ago, i thought this is the best idea ever. I love it!
I observed the developing etc. because im very interested in that phone. So now I want to inform you.

Currently they are working on ideas and concepts. They collect ideas form the community and they've got some partners like Motorola or Google. Everyone can help in developing and bring in his ideas and discuss these ideas, suggestions etc. in the forums with the community. Dave Hakkens and his team is also active there.

I hope you're interested in this phone and you will help. Here's the link to the forums --> Phonebloks: Get involved

I'll keep you up to date if you're interested in because I'll watch this anyways.

P.S.: Don't be too pessimistic! It will take some time but I think it's possible to realize this.

The only way I could see this kind of device working was if it used pulse-modulated carrier frequencies for each device, but that would mean each block has to have it's own modulator chip, and the phone would be prone to errors from EMI.
