The Message in a Bottle is a useless item in itself; however in adventure mode they may be found hidden around the islands with messages from the developer.
Trivia
-There are two hidden message in a bottles in the adventure mode. The first one says "Hello, www.unrealsoftware.de rocks hard! Farewell." The second one says, "A message in a bottle. There is only one number on the sheet: 42. Creepy."
